BACKSLIDE

Because we are all human, we have a tendency to backslide, or fall back into old habits.

It’s so easy to return to our previous patterns, especially if these are patterns we’ve had for a long time.

We want to do the right thing—sit down to write more often, exercise, avoid sugar, call that person we’ve been intending to call—but we don’t.

If you’re dealing with an old habit or behavior pattern, there is a way to break it.

And that way is to create a new habit.

This is one of those awesome NLP practices that rewires your brain.

The trick is, the new habit has to feel better than the old one.

Maybe there is a reward involved—if I write two thousand words today, I will treat myself with two hours of watching Netflix or goofing off on YouTube.

Maybe it’s working on your mindset by complimenting yourself for making progress.

God, I’m so proud of myself for working out today! I’m a total badass!

Maybe it’s buying a whole new expensive outfit you’d normally never buy because you’ve stuck to your diet for a whole month.

Maybe it’s just being kinder to yourself if you fall off the wagon.

Well, I ate too many carbs today. Oh, well. Tomorrow’s another day and I’ll make a fresh start.

Stop and appreciate what you’re doing.

Notice that you’re trying to grow and improve.

Slow down and enjoy the ride more.

“Life moves pretty fast,” as Ferris Bueller would say, “If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

Sometimes we get so caught up in what we need to do, we forget WHY we’re doing it.

And this is when we tend to backslide.

If you pause to have fun along the journey itself, not only will you feel happier overall, you’re way more likely to succeed at what you set out to do.

To help you focus and avoid that backslide, we’ll now do a guided meditation. For more meditations, go to my guided meditations page.

Be sure you’re in a quiet place where you can pay complete attention, where you can concentrate on what is being said, and where you can safely close your eyes.

Let’s begin:

We start by setting an intention to not backslide by committing to loving ourselves

Take a deep breath and on the inhale, send love to yourself

On the exhale, forgive yourself for anything you regret

Take another breath, hold for four seconds, and blow it out, releasing any regrets or judgments you have against yourself

Now, recline into a comfortable position and close your eyes

The reason we backslide is we’re often so hard on ourselves that staying committed to our goals feels impossible

So we’re just going to accept that we’re human and honor that we were trying to do the right thing

But judging ourselves harshly does not lead to staying true to what we really want

It leads to feelings of blame, guilt and shame so we are going to release those painful emotions now

Take a deep breath and as you breathe out say aloud or to yourself, “I release everything I’ve ever blamed myself for.”

Take a normal, natural breath and blow it out, relaxing into this release.

Next, take a deep breath and as you breathe out say aloud or to yourself, “I release everything I’ve ever felt guilty about.”

Take a normal, natural breath and blow it out, relaxing into this release.

Then, take a deep breath and as you breathe out say aloud or to yourself, “I release all my feelings of shame about what I’ve failed to do up till now.”

Take a normal, natural breath and blow it out, relaxing into this release.

You have now created a clean slate, a fresh place to start from.

The next time you go to create some new goal in your life, you’ll encounter less resistance and fewer difficulties.

On the count of three, you’ll accept this belief into both your conscious and subconscious minds.

Three, either aloud or inside your head say, “I love myself and am completely capable of accomplishing my goals.”

Two, take a deep breath down into your heart space, hold for four seconds, and release, feeling the deep love that lives inside you.

And one, open your eyes, refreshed, full of clarity, and ready to achieve that dream of yours.

Now go out into the world, carrying the love you feel for yourself with you.
