Practice: Podcast 032


So today I walk to talk about how you change anything in your life. And the secret to that is to practice it. 

It’s like a muscle. The more you practice sit ups, for example, the better you get at them. The repetition and practice strengthens your muscles until doing sit ups becomes easy. 

The same is true with making a change and even for making your dreams come true. You practice thinking about your life in terms of success, and eventually, you become a success.

I’ve mentioned things like visualization in past podcasts, and my mentor and coach Betsy Pake calls that “imagining.” You imagine what your life would look like if it was exactly how you wanted it to be. 

How would your professional life look? Your job, career or business? 

What would your body look like? 

What would your romantic life look like?

What would your family life look like?

What would your friendships look like?

What would your car look like?

What would your home look like?

What would your vacations look like?

What would your dreams look like?

Imagine everything. Picture your perfect day from start to finish. What’s the first thing you do when you wake up? What do you do during the morning, afternoon and evening? Imagining this or visualizing this is practice for actually having it come to pass. 

So practice. 

Practice thinking about what your perfect life looks like. 

What does it smell like? 

What does it taste like?

What does it sound like?

What does it feel like? Feelings can apply in a tactile way like – I feel the soft leather seats in my brand new car. Or it can be emotionally based like – I wake up feeling rejuvenated and full of energy and joy.

Write or type out everything about your perfect day, then practice living that day all the way through. 

Now think about what made it perfect. What would you need to work on changing to actually make that day happen?

What needs to change in your professional life – your job, career or business? Practice doing that in your mind. 

Now, what do you feel inspired to do?

What needs to change with your body to become that image you imagined? Practice seeing that in your mind’s eye.

Now, what do you feel inspired to do?

Does anything need to change in your romantic, family life or friendships? Practice seeing those relationships as exactly what you want them to be. 

What might need to change so that you can get the car, home or vacation of your dreams?

Practice seeing yourself with these things.

Feel how good that feels?

Soon you’ll likely receive some sort of inspiration. It’ll probably arrive like a new idea in your mind. Don’t ignore it! That’s the inspired action you can take!

So maybe you’ve tried this before. Maybe you’ve focused on your dream life and practiced having it.

And maybe you started to feel icky.

Something that may come up for you after or while you’re doing this is doubt and/or fear. 

First of all, relax.

This is totally normal. 

This is what I’d like you to do when this happens. Acknowledge whatever you’re feeling out loud to yourself. 

Say, “Oh, that tingle of fear I just felt tightening my shoulders is just  because I am daring to picture the life of my dreams. But it’s just fear, and I’m okay.”

Or say, “I feel a jolt of doubt in the pit of my stomach right now because my mind is trying to protect me from danger. But I’m not actually in any danger. Everything is okay.”

Allow yourself to feel what you’re feeling, but also try to separate yourself from it a little. See if you can observe it, and see that emotion as what it really is – your brain’s ancient defense mechanism.

Again, practice. Practice is everything. The old adage is true – practice makes perfect. 

The more you dream and face whatever your mind throws at you the more successful you’ll be at accomplishing those dreams.

Also be aware of other emotions that might mask that doubt or fear. Sometimes it’s more subtle like you’ll think about your dreams and suddenly feel tired. That’s another way that sneaky mind of yours tries to get you to stay stagnate and  “safe.” 


Don’t let your mind get away with that. Be willing to press forward and pursue those dreams of yours. Be willing to see life as an adventure and to grow.
